Walk through our cinema collection.
Walking the Archive
Page 4, curated by Jim Joel, is an ongoing research and curatorial project, a long-term exploration of East Africa’s cinema heritage. Much like lines on a map , thin, fragile, and abstract, yet carrying vast histories, Page 4 traces paths between forgotten cinemas, the streets that connect them, and the people who remember their stories.
The story unfolds in movement: traveling from one cinema to another on foot, by bus, boda boda, or through collective community walks. These journeys extend beyond the city’s streets, transforming into digital routes where scattered archives are reassembled, stories are shared, and memories preserved.
Both online and offline, Page 4 grows as a living archive, connecting film, architecture, and public memory. Each step, image, and story contributes to a shared exploration , revealing how cinema shaped social life, urban heritage, and collective imagination, and how these histories continue to inspire communities today.
Vision
To collect, rearrange, and reassemble scattered archives into spaces where memory breathes again, accessible to all, both in the digital realm and on the city streets. We let the city speak again through its cinemas: their walls, posters, and stories becoming living textures of culture. Page 4 envisions a future where forgotten cinema spaces are not ruins of the past, but vital sites of memory, dialogue, and imagination
Mission
Our mission is to weave together fragments of cinema history into a living archive—accessible, engaging, and shaped with communities both online and offline. Through walking the city as an open archive, gathering scattered posters, films, and memories, and reimagining them through photography, immersive 360° tours, and storytelling, Page 4 transforms forgotten cinemas into shared spaces of learning, creativity, and dialogue. We work across research, art, and public engagement to ensure these stories continue to inspire and connect generations.
